(As I say on the cover of my SEEDS of PEACE CD…)
“DISCOVER THE ANCIENT ART AND EMERGING SCIENCE OF SOUND HEALING”
Now, as I move through this next season of my life, I feel a similar sort of excitement and gratitude regarding my work in the pioneering field of Sound Healing. Many, including myself, consider it the next big wave in integrative medicine. I’m confident that within my lifetime sound healing will become much more of a household word, just as “mind-body medicine” has over these past decades. I feel deeply fortunate that I get to “surf another big one.” C’mon along for the ride……..if you’re ready! I guarantee you, it’s a powerfully transformational and awesome journey.

My intention is to keep posting additional information in this section,

and mind-expanding research in this rapidly growing, fascinating field of study.
WHAT IS SOUND?
Simply put, sound is transmitted vibrations. Vibrations transmitted with frequencies in the range of 20 to 20,000 Hertz (Hz) are generally within the realm of human hearing. Frequencies above 20,000 Hz are referred to as ultrasonic, and frequencies below 20 Hz are referred to as infrasonic.
HOW DO WE PERCEIVE and PROCESS SONIC VIBRATIONS?
Our human bodies are wired to be exquisitely sensitive to sound. Hearing is one of the first senses to develop in utero, and the last to depart before death. Studies have shown that in addition to perceiving sound through our ears, we also sense the pressure waves of sound through our skin. And since water conducts sound at a rate that’s approximately four times faster than air, it’s easy to see how we humans (with bodies composed largely of water) are very receptive to and deeply affected by sonic vibrations.
Bruce Lipton, well-respected neuroscientist and a prominent proponent of the fascinating field of epigenetics, describes, in his book, The Biology of Belief, how ultra-sensitive “primary cilium” – tiny little antenna-like structures on our cell membranes – respond to vibrations:
“The antennas on these energy receptors vibrate like tuning forks. If an energy vibration in the environment resonates with a receptor’s antenna, it will alter the protein’s charge, causing the receptor to change shape. Because these receptors can read energy fields, the notion that only physical molecules can impact cell physiology is outmoded. Biological behavior can be controlled by invisible forces (like sound,) as well as it can be controlled by physical molecules like penicillin, a fact that provides the scientific underpinning for pharmaceutical-free energy medicine.” (Bolding is mine.)
WHAT DOES ALL THIS HAVE TO DO WITH SOUND HEALING?
If, as quantum physics has proven beyond doubt, everything in the physical universe is simply Energy vibrating at different rates, and if this vibrating Energy is all integrally interconnected, then it stands to reason that any change or alteration of vibration can and must affect all other forms of vibration. It’s the science that explains why a butterfly flapping its wings, can ultimately cause a tsunami on the other side of the world. It’s not just a metaphor, or a nice spiritual concept: We are, literally, all in this together.
WHAT FORMS OF SOUND HEALING DOES NANCY USE?
I’ll answer that! (Hence the purple text….) Sometimes you choose your work. Sometimes your work chooses you. With regards to Sound Healing, the latter is definitely the case. Although voice has always been a powerful instrument of healing and expression in my personal life, it was not until I discovered crystal singing bowls that I first began to explore integrating sound healing into my existing professional practice.
I began by playing “the big white bowls” – the ones made solely of quartz crystal, which is what most people think of when they think of crystal singing bowls. In more recent years, I have been drawn, irresistibly, to what are known as Alchemical Crystal Singing Bowls, often called “those beautiful colored bowls.” At present writing, I have more than thirty of these powerful bowls. Their combined, synergistic effects are blissfully out of this world!
ALCHEMICAL CRYSTAL SINGING BOWLS
These unique crystal singing bowls, made by Crystal Tones here in the US, are made of the highest quality (99.992% pure!) quartz crystal, making them incredibly resonant and pure in tone. The tones produced by crystal bowls are not just heard by the ear, but are also deeply felt in the body. Their powerful tones and overtones profoundly affect your entire being, including your various energy centers (or chakras). The bowls’ very high vibratory frequencies sometimes “stir things up”, as part of the clearing process they’ve been called upon to do. Most often, though, they immediately induce a deep “theta wave” state of relaxation, which allows for powerful transcendent experiences and rapid vibrational rebalancing. Often, the bowls elegantly facilitate profound spiritual awakenings and healing on all levels of being.
In addition to the pure quartz crystal and the finest in gemstones and precious metals (such as 24 karat gold, ruby, platinum, diamond, citrine, rose quartz, indium, and cobalt.) infused in the twenty or more bowls with which I work, THE most powerful element (when working with the bowls or in any kind of healing work!) is INTENTION.
And the most powerful intention, always, is Love.
For more on the power of intention, and how it applies to my healing work, see Services – Private sessions.
Our voices are incredibly powerful healing instruments. Most of us, by the time we’re adults, have shut down or restricted our voices to one degree or another, telling ourselves all sorts of limiting things like, “I can’t sing” or “I hate my voice.” Or, in more extreme cases, “I don’t deserve to be heard…I’m just going to keep my mouth shut. It’s safer that way.”
Toning is NOT singing. As I always tell private clients and concert attendees, it’s not what it sounds like that’s important – it’s what it feels like that really matters! It has been a powerful personal journey for me, using toning to free up old energetic blocks, and it’s something I feel deeply passionate about sharing with others. We are meant to express freely with our voices, whether speaking, singing, toning or just in spontaneous non-verbal utterances. The vibrations we create with our own voices are powerful, customized medicine, used to rebalance and attune our entire being.
BAMBOO NOSE FLUTE
Another instrument I use in my sound healing practice is the nose flute. I have several flutes, custom made for me by a Hawaiian master carver, healer and musician. A “nose flute,” known in the Hawaiian culture as “ohe hano ihu,” is a flute carved out of a single section of bamboo that you play with your nose. According to Polynesian tradition, the ohe hano ihu (or “hano” for short) was originally an instrument of courtship.
But why play it with your nose, you might ask? As my (Hawaiian) teacher explained to me, humans often use the breath through the mouth to speak untruths. But the breath through the nostrils remains sacred. So the nose flute is often thought of as a sacred instrument, an instrument of devotion.
Our bones also conduct sound. Many hearing aids now utilize this innate conductivity, by transmitting sound through the skull directly to the cochlea.
Another good example of bone conductivity is a technique that uses a vibrating tuning fork to determine if a bone is fractured. In this technique, the tuning fork is placed distal to (below) the suspected fracture, and the stethoscope is placed proximal to (above) the injury on the same bone. A clear tone indicates an uninjured bone; the sound is diminished or absent in the presence of a fracture.
I’ve personally had some amazing results with what I’ve come to call Bone Toning™. This is a technique in which I vocally tone directly into a client’s body. Effects of this Bone Toning™ have ranged from profound emotional clearing and deep theta state relaxation to immediate release of extreme muscle spasms and “pinched nerves.”
